Index-Galena Road Juniors Field Trip Report

posted Oct 14, 2012, 8:19 PM by Unknown user
On our trip to the Index-Galena Road washout on October 7th, we learned about gold panning, the history of the area (including the flood in 2006), the weather that affected the river, and about some of the rocks in the area and how they came to be there.  We saw the road that was broken by the rising water level and looked on both sides of the water for interesting minerals.  We found lots of garnets while we were panning, some blue agate, and noticed lots of stones that had iron in them.  I also want to say thank you to Jim Miller for talking to all the field trip participants about the history of the granite (as well as some other rocks there) and teaching me so much about gold panning. Another thanks to my Dad for giving a talk to us about the weather and how it affected the area.  If I lead another trip, I hope some of you Juniors can go on it with me! -- Miriel McFarland
